Why 'Nutmeg and Pepper'?
Nutmeg and Pepper are the names of my guinea pigs.
I created this blog about my guinea pigs, and my experiences and tips for other owners. I have discovered that direct info from owners is by far the most helpful. So I am writing to all the guinea pig owners who have had the same frustration with inadequate sources. Here may be some answers to your troubles!
Yep. It's cold season. If your piggies are looking alittle tired or sniffly, here's what to do.
Feed them vitamin c: Every day give your piggies a quarter to a half of a bell pepper each. Bell peppers pack in the vitamin c, a vitamin they need to stay healthy and ward off sickness. Feed them other assorted veggies as well.
Keep them warm: Guinea pigs prefer temperatures from 66 to 75 degrees. If your house is cool, put them in a warmer spot.
If your guinea pigs are very sluggish, are eating less, have a persistent cold, gooey eyes or are worse than just a little sniffle, contact a vet. Guinea pigs are subtle when they are sick, so something small could be making them very sick. Keep the piggies healthy!
Nutmeg and Pepper ADORE tunnels. Unfortunately, they also like eating them. So I found at Pet Quarters this magical tunnel called a 'Chube.' The Chube is made of vegetable parchment, so you don't have to worry that your piggy is eating plastic or other unknown materials. So I let my piggies chew all they want. One thing to note: These tubes are chewed up fairly quickly (like a week or two if you leave it in the cage day and night, ) so to make it last longer, take it out in the late afternoon so it can'tbe chewed up as a midnight 'snack.'
I now have 3 cats. So my name isn't completely true. Ho hum.
My guinea pigs chew on everything. Even their plastic pigloo. So I got them a SnakShak toy. YAY! Now they are chewing on something that if they swallow it they can digest it safely. This is defintiely better than plastic. My guinea pigs are reluctant to chew wood so the SnakShak has been my savior.
The SnakShak is made primarily of compressed wood shavings, which guinea pigs tend to nibble on in their cage anyways.
Actually it's hard to say which is cuter... But many piggies I've seen are cuter than chinchillas. MINE ARE!
My guinea pigs get bored of the cage set up every one in a while, so I mix it up a little. Yesterday I hooked some tunnels together and suspended them from the top of the cage. Nutmeg loves it. I will post pictures of this soon.
Nutmeg and Pepper go through little phases when they like to do a certain thing repetetively. Their new thing is to put there stuff in their food bowl. I found various treats and often toys sitting in their bowl for no apparent reason. Haha. They are always amusing me with their strange little quirks.
